Good that you want to learn Dutch! You really need the Dutch language everywhere. If you want to ask something on the street or if you go to the doctor. And of course if you really want to connect with the people you meet. The Dutch really like it when you try to speak their language.
You also have many more opportunities to find work if you speak Dutch. It is also necessary for many studies to know Dutch. And of course it is mandatory for integration.

Facts
- NT2 is a key term in Dutch language lessons. It stands for ‘Nederlands als tweede taal’, which means ‘Dutch as a second language’. Your native language is your first language. So Dutch is your second language. And perhaps you know even more languages as a second language.
- You can know a language at 6 different levels. The description of these levels can be found in the CEFR (European Framework of Reference). In Europe, the same format is used for all languages:
- A1 and A2: basic users (beginners)
- B1 and B2: independent users (intermediate)
- C1 and C2: proficient users (advanced)
- With the language you also learn a lot about Dutch culture. For example, by talking at work or reading a book by a Dutch author. Also if you listen to Dutch songs or watch a TV programme, you learn things that are different from the country you come from. For example:
- How do colleagues talk to each other?
- Which news is important in the Netherlands?
- Which ideas and feelings do the Dutch have?
These are the things that you learn particularly outside of class.
