Working in the Netherlands
Working is a good way to participate in the Netherlands. This is how you make contact with all kinds of people. You also learn a lot about the Dutch (work) culture at your workplace. It also feels good to participate: you can use your talents, knowledge and experience. And with work you can earn your own money. For all these reasons, work is an important part of integration.
When can you work?
If you want to work in the Netherlands, certain rules apply. These rules are different for status holders than for asylum seekers.
Look for a job
Make sure you are well informed! In the ‘Tips for looking for work’ you can read what you can do to find work. These tips are especially important, because it is often more difficult to find work as a newcomer. You do not speak the Dutch language very well yet. Furthermore, an employer is often not familiar with your diploma, knowledge and experience. Don’t be discouraged! And make sure you prepare well for your job search.
Different types of work
Are you unable to find paid work immediately? Then look for an internship or work experience position. There you can see what you have to do in the Netherlands for a certain job. You can also do volunteer work. This way you improve your Dutch, gain work experience and a larger network. After that you have a better chance of a paid job. But maybe you don’t want to work as an employee and you prefer to become an independent entrepreneur.
